Chocolate Malt Layer Cake {Milk Bar Monday 2/18}

chocolate malt cake

I’m going to keep this short and sweet because this recipe looks daunting enough as it is!

Jacqueline originally picked a chocolate to have in her recipe arsenal. Since this one is challenging to make gluten free/dairy free she asked me to post the original recipe. I gladly obliged.

Jacqueline is ah-mazing and made this cake gluten free so if you know someone with a food allergy, they can still enjoy the cake! Check out her gluten free cake recipe here!

We have a small group this week. Me, Audra over at The Baker Chick, and Jacqueline.

Don’t forget to check out our Pinterest page with pictures of all our past Milk Bar Monday recipes.

Like I said, this recipe looks daunting all typed up. But each component is fairly quick to make on its own, so the process isn’t too time consuming.

My notes on the recipe:

I wanted the middle layer to be laden with fudge so I used 1/4 of the recipe in each step, and I saved the fudge used to make the cake to pour over my finished  product. [Read more...]

Chocolate Chocolate Cookies {Milk Bar Monday 7/16}

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve had a chance to post. Actually my last post was the Sweet Corn Cereal Milk Ice Cream Pie.

I’ve found I always manage to make time for our Milk Bar Mondays. This has quickly become my favorite posting group to be apart of.

Christina’s book has taught me a lot about baking and I feel I am much more confident in the kitchen because of the recipes I have learned for MBM.

Some of the most beneficial so far:

  • Birthday Layer Cake – a true recreation of one of my favorite boxed cake mixes. Make me thing about how contrasting flavors work so well. Also, Christina’s way of building cakes is brilliant.

  • Cinnamon Bun Pie – the mother dough and liquid cheesecake recipes are some of the most valuable recipes in the whole book.

  • Compost Cookies – think outside the box! Also taught me proper mixing procedure for all her cookies.

I also love that all of us are able to talk about the recipes as we make them. For example, these chocolate cookies.

Cassie e-mailed us about her experience with the recipe. Some of the girls cut down on the butter like Cassie did, while others stuck to the recipe.

I decided to compensate a different way. Just to see how mine might turn out compared to everyone else’s. Instead of cutting down on the butter I added 3/4 of the chocolate crumbs instead of half, and I mixed the dry ingredients in for a full 40 seconds (instead of my usual 20ish). [Read more...]

Grasshopper Pie {Milk Bar Monday 6/4}

It’s time for another Milk Bar Monday!

I am really starting to love mondays…aren’t you?

This week’s recipe was chosen by Nicole of Sweet Peony.

In the book Christina talks about how she wishes she could have made it work with the liquid cheesecake.

But I liked the sweet and minty flavor of the filling. It wasn’t overwhelmingly cream cheesy.

The final product is a dense brownie in a graham cracker crust with a layer of creamy mint filling separating the two.

Recipe note: I had to bake my pie an additional 5 minutes. I also refrigerated the pie overnight before slicing into it. [Read more...]

White Chocolate Creme Brûlée for #Chocolatelove

white chocolate creme brûlée

Thank you Junia for inviting me to be a co-host for #chocolatelove! Don’t forget to check out the other co-hosts and add your chocolate recipes to the blog hop!

I was excited to see that February was #chocolatelove month.

What better time of year (than maybe Halloween) to totally indulge in chocolate.

When first brainstorming recipes to make, chocolate cake came to mind. A double layer chocolate cake with thick chocolate frosting is irresistible.

Chocolate cake is love!

But I wanted to try something new. I decided to (finally) try my hand at creme brûlée.

Creme brûlée is a creamy, silky smooth custard like dessert with a crunchy melted sugar topping.

Creme brûlée is amazing, it’s super easy, and it can be made ahead of time!

If you are still looking for a Valentine’s Day dessert I highly recommend trying this white chocolate creme brûlée.

Make it a day or 2 ahead of time (minus the caramelized sugar) and store in the fridge until you are ready. If you want to add a little extra something, top the caramelized sugar with a few strawberries or raspberries right before serving. [Read more...]
