Chocolate Malt Layer Cake {Milk Bar Monday 2/18}

chocolate malt cake

I’m going to keep this short and sweet because this recipe looks daunting enough as it is!

Jacqueline originally picked a chocolate to have in her recipe arsenal. Since this one is challenging to make gluten free/dairy free she asked me to post the original recipe. I gladly obliged.

Jacqueline is ah-mazing and made this cake gluten free so if you know someone with a food allergy, they can still enjoy the cake! Check out her gluten free cake recipe here!

We have a small group this week. Me, Audra over at The Baker Chick, and Jacqueline.

Don’t forget to check out our Pinterest page with pictures of all our past Milk Bar Monday recipes.

Like I said, this recipe looks daunting all typed up. But each component is fairly quick to make on its own, so the process isn’t too time consuming.

My notes on the recipe:

I wanted the middle layer to be laden with fudge so I used 1/4 of the recipe in each step, and I saved the fudge used to make the cake to pour over my finished  product. [Read more...]

Apple Pie Cake Truffles {Milk Bar Monday 12/3}

apple pie cake truffles

It’s time for another Milk Bar Monday. It’s a small one today – just Audra and I!

But that’s okay, we have a tasty new recipe for you.

Remember the apple pie layer cake I made back in February?  Imagine that (minus the frosting) rolled up into a cake truffle covered in white chocolate. Just like those carrot cake truffles we made.

These were fairly easy, as far as MBM posts go. No new ingredients or techniques, just a different assembly process.

Blueberry Muffin Cake

One of the bf’s favorite baked items is a blueberry muffin. He told me to make them at least once this summer and I finally got around to it a few weeks ago.

I was feeling nice one day and decided to make a batch for him. About 20 minutes later the oven was preheated, the batter was made, but I couldn’t find a muffin pan!

The next best option was to make this in the 9×9 pan and go the crumb cake route. While this muffin cake is not as dense as a crumb cake it still pairs well with coffee for a sweet breakfast option.

Birthday Layer Cake {Milk Bar Monday 6/18}

birthday layer cake

Hello everyone! I hope you have been enjoying the guest post recipes this week. I know I have!

Today we are taking a little break… I am back at it with our next Milk Bar Monday installment! Our host for today was Audra and she chose the Birthday Layer Cake.

Christina Tosi’s goal with this recipe was to recreate the funfetti boxed cake mix flavors in her own way.

The bf & I thought her recipe was spot on. We both loved the cake crumb layers in with the frosting layers. It reminded me of when I used to get the crunch layer in my DQ ice cream cake.

Compared to some of our past recipes I thought this was a relatively easy one. I was able to get it all done in one go and freeze it overnight.

You can easily make this at home (with the help of a cake ring) and impress your loved ones on their next birthday.

Vegan Rocky Road Cake {Guest Post from Gormandize with A-dizzle & K-bobo}

vegan chocolate cake

Hello everyone! Today I have my friend Keely of Gormandize with A-dizzle & K-bobo – enjoy!

I’ve been blogging for exactly one year this month. It’s been a great experience thus far and I’m learning loads as I go.

Like most bloggers I started off with some recipes which had really dodgy photos and this vague idea that maybe my blog could be awesomely successful without me putting that much effort into it.

More than a hundred recipes, a new camera and hours of work later, I’ve managed to build my blog into something that I’m really happy with and proud of.

But the best thing I discovered about blogging was the unexpected friendships that sprung out of it with other bloggers.

It has been wonderful to connect with other food lovers all over the world and have fun exploring food with your new friends. One such friend I have been happy to make is Erin from BigFatBaker, and I was very happy when she asked me to write a guest post for her.

This cake is one that I made for my mother’s birthday recently, and it was a creation I just had always wanted to try. You may notice that my rocky road contains absolutely no marshmallows. There are two main reasons for this:

  1. Marshmallow are a cheap way to fill out rocky road so that you don’t have to put in so much of the decadent and luscious ingredients
  2. Marshmallows are made from gelatine – which is made from boiling up all the skin, crushed bones, connective tissues, organs and sometimes intestines of slaughtered animals. Now, I’m a vegan, but that aside, I don’t know who would really want to put that in their bodies!

One other quick thing before getting to the delicious point! If you wanted to make this cake even better I would recommend doubling the quantity of the rocky road topping and using it as the filling in the layer cake as well – just to make it extra rocky! [Read more...]
