Hello everyone! Today I have Jen from Juanita’s Cocina – enjoy!
Hi! I’m Jen from Juanita’s Cocina! I was so excited when Erin asked if I would do a guest post on her blog while she went on vacation! Since I can’t go with her, I figure this is probably the next best thing…since I get to eat all of the sweets I make for “her”!
Erin is one of the first bloggers I began following when I started blogging 5 months ago. I think she’s an amazing and inspiring baker, but beyond that, she is super sweet. And she just so happens to be the hostess with the mostest of my favorite blog group, The Holiday Recipe Club. How can you not adore someone who uses every holiday as an excuse to make delicious food? You can’t!
I couldn’t make just any ‘ol thing for Erin. It had to be something delicious, different, and drool-worthy.
When I began searching through all of the desserts I’ve been wanting to try, this recipe for Green Chile and Apple Cobbler from The Homesick Texan kept catching my eye. Green chiles in dessert? How could I not try it?
I am so glad I listened to my hungry gut. Because this is one of the most amazing desserts I’ve made in…well, in just about forever. The chiles bring a great smokiness to an otherwise boring apple cobbler. There’s just a *hint* of spice, which compliments the mild sweetness of this cobbler perfectly.
I hope you’re as excited about this dish as I was when I first saw it. Of course, I was downright amazed once I tasted it.
I swore up and down that I’d send some of the extra to Erin, but oops. We polished this off pretty quick. She’s on vacation anyways, so hopefully she’s having a good enough time that she won’t even know…
Green Chile and Apple Cobbler
Ingredients:
For the Filling
- 2 Hatch (or Anaheim) chiles
- 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. allspice
- 2 tsp. brown sugar
- For the Dough
- 1 stick of unsalted butter
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 stick of unsalted butter
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup milk
Instructions:
Roast the chiles under the broiler until they just begin to blacken, for approximately 5 minutes per side.
Place the broiled chiles in a bag or bowl with a lid and allow them to steam to loosen the skin, for 15-20 minutes. Once the chiles have steamed, peel them, remove the stem and the seeds, and dice into large pieces.
Toss the diced chiles with the apples, cinnamon, allspice, and brown sugar and set aside.
For the Cobbler
Preheat your oven to 350.
In a large cast-iron skillet, melt the butter on top of the stove over low heat.
Meanwhile, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk until a thin batter is formed.
Once the butter is melted, turn off the heat and pour the batter into the skillet, but do not stir.
Spread the apple and chile mixture evenly over the top of the batter.
Bake uncovered for approximately 50-60 minutes, or until the center is set and the edges are browned. If the edges begin to brown too quickly, feel free to cover them with a bit of aluminum foil while the center continues to bake.
Cobbler can be served warm or cooled. We served ours warm, with a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Okay, maybe it’s not as great as being on vacation, but it’s close!
I hope when Erin gets back, she has a side of spicy cobbler with a fabulous tan!

I do love peppers and cobbler…now you have me very curious on how this tastes. Very interesting and a dessert with a different twist.
Thanks for having me, Erin! I loved doing this post!
Wow this is a change from the traditional, I love it!!!!
Erin- Hope you are enjoying your time off. You certainly left things in good hands.
Jen- I am loving this. It would never occur to me to put green chile in it but I bet it just takes it to the next level. I must try this out. I love the unusual twist. I’m all about turning things on their heads.
Hi Jen, what a unique and delightful cobbler!
