A Vitamix Lesson

Sunday, before I started school for the spring semester, was intended to be a relaxing day.

My #SundaySupper  post was up, I had been productive, and the day was going smoothly. So I decided to make some smoothies with my Vitamix (lovingly named Blendy by the boyfriend).

Side note: This wasn’t the first time I had used a Vitamix … This wasn’t even this first time I had used Blendy. But the error I made was so silly you’d think I’d never touched a blender before.

This is what happened…

I happily made a cup of coffee, stirred in a tablespoon of sugar and 2 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder then let it chill in the refrigerator.

Then I chopped up 2 bananas and dumped them into the Vitamix, added the coffee, 1/2 a cup of milk and a cup of ice.

After I blended this to my hearts content I gave it a taste. The texture, thickness and flavor were perfect. So, I set up a little area on the counter to take a few pictures, grabbed a glass then went to move the Vitamix back a bit.

I think you have an idea of what might have happened… If not, here’s a little play by play.

With glass in hand I attempted to push back the base of Blendy (I had already given the smoothie a taste so the lid was off – mistake 1).

My arm bumped into the On/Off switch and sent smoothie everywhere (I hadn’t unplugged the Vitamix once I was done – mistake 2).

Luckily I didn’t drop my glass and was able to quickly flip the switch, saving most of my smoothie. Unfortunately it was too late for my kitchen.

This was definitely the biggest mess I’ve ever seen in my kitchen… The BF said that moment alone was worth every penny he paid for the Vitamix.

Morale of the story? Take the container off the base to taste anything, and don’t forget to unplug your blender immediately!

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Recipe adapted from the Vitamix Recipe Book – makes 3 cups

Ingredients:

  • 2 very ripe bananas
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 cup regular coffee, cooled to room temperature
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 1/2 cup half and half

To Make the Smoothie:

  1. Whisk the cocoa powder and sugar into the coffee while it’s hot, then set aside to cool.
  2. Once the coffee is cool, layer the ingredients in your blender in the order they are listed.
  3. Switch the blender to low while still off. When ready to blend make sure the lid is secure and turn it on, then switch to high. Blend for 15-25 seconds, or until smooth.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness or consistency as needed.
  5. Pour into 2 glasses and enjoy.

  1. Ahahhaha, this sounds like something I totally would have done. Nice name for your blender too :) I still haven’t named mine yet… I figure when the time is right, it’ll happen. Great recipe too, thanks for sharing!

It was so funny, I usually don’t name my things but my boyfriend was going to say blender and out of nowhere said blendy. It kinda stuck after that.

  2. Oh no! But I have done similar things before. I had a vast salsa verde explosion once, and when I pureed hot apples to make apple sauce at a friend’s house, his mixer went up like a rocket, too.
The smoothie sounds really tasty, though!

  3. Funny! I had a blender incident too. I put too much hot soup in it and when I turned it on the soup expanded and blew off the lid. Orange butternut squash soup went everywhere. Glad to see I’m not the only one with kitchen oopsies.

Ooh hot soup would be such a bummer! I was a little freaked out at the time but luckily it only took a few minutes before I was laughing. It was just so unexpected!

  4. it is scary when you have appliances come on unexpectedly. The unplug step is one that I never forget, for I have had the same incident happen to me.
Your smoothie does sound like a tasty blend-love the flavors you included in the recipe. Have a great weekend!

  5. Glad the smoothie was saved, but stinks to clean all that up.

  6. To funny! I hate when things like that happen! Well at least you saved most of your smoothie. By the way I plan on making your smmothie today, it sounds wonderful. My sister told me she puts banana and coffee in a smoothie and loves it!! I thought she was kind of strange! But now I see your picture, messy and all, I must try it for sure, you make it look so yummy!

The coffee flavor is pretty subtle, but you still get the caffeine boost!I didn’t use much ice so if you like your smoothies thick you’ll need about a cup more.

  7. I’ve so been there! It’s ok to blame it all on Blendy :)

  9. OMG what a mess! I think I’d move rather than clean it up :)

    Smoothie looks great though.

  10. What a mess, lol! I’ve somehow managed a mess like that without the help of a mixer =D

  11. OMG we must be related I have done this TWICE!! lol,,,

  12. I’m so sorry but I am laughing out loud at this one!! I can totally picture it happening…ugh! At least you saved the smoothie and have a hilarious story to tell.

  13. OH geez! I just got a Vitamix for Christmas and have been using it like crazy. I can totally see myself doing this. At least you have a good sense of humor about it and nice photos to go with your story!

  14. My my my!!!! I started busting up even before I read the story. I did something similar with salsa once. It does really suck and I know I found salsa for weeks after that event. It was all over the place. The worst was getting it off the ceiling. So, thank you for a very good laugh

Lol I am glad you enjoyed it! I was NOT laughing then (BF was) but I can now. I was so lucky it didn’t get on the ceiling…that would have been the worst.

  15. This reminds me of that time when I spilled chocolate panna cotta all over my counter, the mixture found its way to the drawers… Ughhh I spent hours cleaning up! So jealous of your vitamix. I’m getting a dehydrator, vitamix is next on the list :)

  16. I was just looking through your smoothies on your smoothie central page and I must admit this one looks scrum my for me favourite fruit bananas and choc milk. Going to have to give this one a go.

    Thanks lee
