Sometimes it’s hard to change a classic. You want the new one to be exciting and different. But it’s just not the same. You just can’t get past how good the original is.
That is how I feel about the classic rice crispy treat. The boxed ones may be convenient, but you know they don’t compare to the homemade version.
The homemade version is chewier, stickier, and full of butter. Why not take the extra 10 minutes to make the batch at home?
Now that you are convinced you have to make some at home, here’s the recipe. And I promise it’s the best.
Feel free to make some additions (chocolate chips or m&m’s are good!) but you still measure everything properly!
Don’t just pour in the whole box of rice crispies, and just toss in the marshmallows and butter. Take the 30 seconds to measure out the cereal and count the marshmallows. Trust me on this one.
Now since I feel you must know, I doubled this recipe. Completely unnecessary, but you can feed an army with all the rice crispy treats you’ll make. So if you want to make these for a party, pot luck, or barbeque (or if you just want some extra large rice crispy treats..) I recommend the recipe doubled!
Homemade Rice Crispy Treats
Recipe exactly as it says on the box.
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter (use the real stuff, the tub stuff won’t be the same!)
- 40 regular sized marshmallows
- 6 cups rice crispy cereal
Directions:
- In a large saucepan melt the butter over low heat.
- Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted.
- Using a greased or buttered spatula stir in the cereal. Stir until fully coated and mixed.
- Pour into a greased or parchment lined 9×13 pan, and spread evenly.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.
- This recipe is microwave safe! Simply melt the butter and marshmallows in the microwave and mix in the cereal. Cut and serve as usual.
- You can substitute 7 oz (1 jar) of marshmallow creme for the butter and marshmallows. Stir in cereal and serve as usual. Check out how to make your own marshmallow fluff!
- To freeze: layer bars with wax paper in air tight container and freeze for up to 6 weeks. Allow to come to room temperature before serving.
- Add food coloring to the melted marshmallows (before adding the cereal) to make different colored treats.
- Top or dip in chocolate for the ultimate rice crispy treat!

Aren’t rice krispy treats the best?!! Thanks for the recipe love
You’re welcome!
I just made a similar Rice Krispy Treat but threw in some sprinkles to make it more jazzy. Love them, easy, amazing and delish!
Oh I just LOVE rice krispy treats! They remind me of being a kid so much, these look delicious!
These are so well liked and easy to make. I cannot even believe that these are packaged and sold at stores and some sandwich places-I mean how lazy is that!
I promise you if I eat one of your squares, I will not miss any of the preservatives. Yum-thanks for sharing a classic favorite.
These were always my favorite when I was younger! I need to make some again!
I love Rice Krispie treats, too…though, I want to try them with browned butter
Sometimes you just can’t beat a classic!
Can’t go wrong with these!! Good stuff!!
Yum! I haven’t made rice crispy treats in so long. Im definitely going to head out and get a box of rice krispies and some marshmallows so I can make this. Such good memories associated with this classic, simple dessert. Thanks for reminding and inspiring me to make these!
Hard to believe but I grew up in a time when if you wanted a rice krispy treat you had to invite snap, crackle and pop into a bowl. I’m such a booster for home made over store bought. We should control what goes into our food and it shouldn’t be filled with preservatives or things we can’t pronounce.
These look fantastic! (and real)
These look perfect! I have not had rice crspy treats in so long…love it
I agree…sometimes there is no need to change up a classic recipe. BUT, I urge you to try them with a 1/2 cup peanut butter added to the marshmellow…its amazing!
I am all for changing things up now and then
I adore this classic. It’s timeless and definitely high on my feel good food list.
If this is the classic, please don’t change it… please!
Looks DELISH!
LOL, I must be weird. I like the different kinds too much to ever make the original! My fave is the salted brown butter crispy treats.
Yum! I haven’t had these in yrs. I used to make them all the time. Easy and great to have around in case you get a bad case of the munchies and just want something sweet and chewy. I have to admit, tho, that I really like the peanut butter cup reciipe. Like eating a crunchie, chewy Reese’s peanut butter cup. Geez, I am making my self hungry. Got to stop thinking about them.
actually its hard to make the perfect rice krispy treat! to make it perfectly soft and chewy, you definitely have to measure!! or else it’s rock hard or too much marshmellow! yay for yummy snacks!
Rice crispy treats are my favorite! I swear I could eat a whole tray….:)
These bring me back to my childhood. I used to love making rice crispy treats. I havent made them in years. I just may have to.
